The answer to both would indicate if Asus was a competitor with the Steam Deck, or it would join the ranks of other, vastly more expensive, handheld gaming PCs. Janhoi McGregorīefore the ROG Ally launched there were two giant questions that needed to be answered: battery life and price. There are very few (if any) business owners like Mike Rose these days, and we feel very fortunate to have found him.The Steam Deck and Ally Rog side by side. Most importantly, Mike did not consider the project done until we were completely satisfied with his results of his work. He does not cut corners, make false promises, or commit to things he can’t do….and if the job requires him to spend more time to get you the perfect result, he does it with a positive attitude and without charging a single extra cent. Needless to say, the rolling screen now works flawlessly and we couldn’t be happier with Mike’s work! From start to finish we were in awe of Mike’s commitment to the project his perseverance and attention to detail are both unrivaled and very rare in today’s times. Because of the complexity of the system and the custom parts required, Mike spent nearly two full days working on the issue at our home, and that doesn’t include the time he spent researching the issue on his own, dealing numerous times with the manufacturer, and ordering (and re-ordering) the needed specialty parts. We have a complicated rolling screen mechanism that unexpectedly broke, and Mike thankfully agreed to take on the project (at least three other people we called wouldn’t). Mike Rose deserves 10 stars!!! If you are looking for a true professional to tackle your screen project or issue who does what he says he is going to do at the exact price quoted, look no further than Mike Rose and Maryland Screens. I will definitely call Maryland Screens for jobs in the future. Mike was generous with his time, his suggestions, and his knowledge. Then he allowed me to ask about another project we have in mind. He asked questions about our preferences regarding the door and proceeded to do the installation the way it should have been done initially. Our installer, Mike, is also the owner of Maryland Screens. Heather was very good about communicating with us. Once we decided on a solution, she gave us a reasonable estimate and an accurate delivery/installation timeframe. I called Heather at Maryland Screens, and she presented us with practical options. Several tradespeople had tried unsuccessfully to remedy the issues, and we had become very frustrated. Prior to finding this business, we endured a couple years of struggle with our home’s builder and four failed screen door handle/latch installations. I couldn’t be more pleased with the efficient, considerate, and professional service we received from Maryland Screens. ![]()

If you want to take this even further, the cuts to the sides of the cross could be replaced with small wheat stalks as seen in the first design. This leads to an incredibly detailed score! Similarly to the first design, the cross and side slashes are best done with a straight blade angled at 90° to the dough’s surface.Īs seen above, start with the cross and cut in slightly deeper than for the secondary cuts to the side. In this design the center cross is cut slightly deeper than the other slashes, encouraging the center area to open more dramatically. Then, repeat for the other side of the stalk where each cut matches its pair to the side. I like to add a gentle curve as the cuts progress from top to bottom this curved set looks nice when the loaf expands up and outward in the oven. Start at the top of the round (the side farthest from you) and begin making diagonal slashes in series from top to bottom. A straight blade cuts straight into the dough at a 90° angle, perfect for the straight cut for each leaf. The preferred scoring implement for this design is a straight blade. The size and number are up to you, but I prefer larger cuts spaced regularly. This design is one of my favorites for boules: a series of small cuts along the sides intended to emulate leaves or wheat stalks. Are there any spots that don’t look like they’re cut sufficiently deep? If so, lightly run the lame (blade) over the same cut line again to ensure spreading in the oven. When finished, take a look at the design. Note that a single and double slash do require a little more scoring depth, but the others should just break the surface so you see the interior of the dough, with the outside slowly splaying open. The key to success in each of the designs below is to score deep enough to cut through the skin of the dough formed during shaping, but not so deep that structural integrity is compromised. Depth and speed in bread scoring techniques Be light with dusting as too much flour can quickly cake on the dough, transforming it from blank canvas to messy chalkboard.Īt this point, the dough is ready for you to score and bake. Using a fine-mesh sieve filled with the dusting flour, hold it above the dough and tap the side as you move around to evenly coat the surface. The top of the dough might have flour from the basket brush off the flour gently so only an even layer remains. I add 50% all-purpose flour because I do like scattered color, but if you prefer an all-white surface, go with 100% white rice flour.įirst, turn your proofed dough from its proofing basket out onto a piece of parchment paper or (carefully) into a preheated baking vessel. White rice flour has a higher scorch temperature that helps it retain a stark white color, even after prolonged time in the oven. I prefer to use a mixture of 50% white rice flour and 50% all-purpose flour. But first, let’s talk about how to set the stage and prepare the dough for scoring.ĭusting the top of your loaves with flour prior to scoring will ensure maximum contrast between white flour and dark, baked crust. Each technique listed below is merely a starting point, a springboard for you to invent your own personal mark. In this post, we’ll look at various scoring techniques using my Fresh-Milled Spelt Sourdough Bread recipe. There’s satisfaction in cutting dough you’ve spent time coercing from nascency to maturity, like a painter’s first brushstrokes on an all-white canvas brimming with potential. As we lined up in front of our loaves-to-be the wide grins were hard to ignore. I recently attended a week-long baking workshop and after spending the good part of two days hands-deep in dough - admittedly, my favorite part - everyone seemed most excited to score dough. ![]() Stars, leaves, flowers, geometric shapes of all kinds - when utilizing the correct scoring implement ( see my last post on scoring implements and general techniques), creativity has no bounds. As the old saying goes: we eat first with our eyes.Ī single or double slash promotes a large opening but a series of small, delicate slashes creates a more intricate design. But from there, let your creativity run free. First and foremost, scoring bread dough with decorative cuts serves an important purpose: it guides a loaf to rise in a consistent, controlled, and optimal manner. With a blade in hand and a shaped round of dough on the workbench, bakers have an unexpected blank canvas before them. ![]() ![]() The email ended with Torvalds mentioning what he prefers to use instead of GitHub when it comes to merging Linux kernels, and for the sake of ongoing development, Torvalds felt it was important to do the right and better thing, which meant merging from the command line rather than using a completely broken GitHub web interface. The whole process for solving single variable algebraic equations can be summarized by the following steps. Using the additive property, the solution is obtained by adding 5 to both sides of the equation, so x = 12. For this example, this is accomplished by adding –2x to both sides of the equation, which gives x – 5 = 7. The next step is to eliminate the unknown from one side of the equation. This equation, when simplified, becomes 3x – 5 = 2x + 7. On the right side, there are no like terms, but the 4x and –x on the left side are like terms. The first step in solving this equation is to combine like terms on each side of the equation. Consider the equation 4x – x – 5 = 2x + 7. Most equations are given in a more complicated form that can be simplified. ![]() Both sides of this equation are then divided by 4 and it simplifies to the solution, x = 4. In this equation, –7 is added to both sides of the equation and it simplifies to 4x = 16. ![]() Often, both of these rules must be employed to solve a single equation, such as the equation 4x + 7 = 23. ![]() When this is done 2x/2 = 14/2 the equation simplifies to x = 7. In the case of the equation 2x = 14, the solution is obtained by dividing both sides by 2. This property can also be used to solve algebraic equations. Thusthe equation becomes2y – 4= 20, but the solution remains y = 12. Using the multiplicative rule, one can obtain an equivalent equation, one with the same solution set, by multiplying both sides by any number, such as 2. For instance, the solution for the equation y – 2 = 10 is y = 12. The second fundamental rule, known as the multiplicative property of equality, states that every term on both sides of an equation can be multiplied or divided by the same number without changing the solution to the equation. If this is done, the equation simplifies to x + 4 – 4 = 7 – 4orx = 3 and the equation is solved. The solution to the previous example x + 4 = 7 can be found by adding –4 to both sides of the equation. To use this property to find the solution to an equation, all that is required is choosing the right number to add. This rule is known as the additive property of equality. By adding 4 to both sides, the equation becomes x + 8 = 11 but the solution remains x = 3. According to the first rule, one can add any number to both sides of the equation and still get the same solution. For example, the equation x + 4 = 7has a solution of x = 3. The first rule states that the same quantity can be added to both sides of an equation without changing the solution to the equation. Using the two fundamental rules of algebra, solutions to many simple equations can be obtained. These values make up the solution set of the equation. The second example has two values that will make the statement true, namely 2 and –2. For the first example, the solution for x is 13. The solution, or root, of an equation is any value or set of values that can be substituted into the equation to make it a true statement. For example, x + 2 = 15 is an equation, as is y 2 = 4. Methods for solving simple equationsĪn equation is an algebraic expression which typically relates unknown variables to other variables or constants. Solutions for some higher degree equations were worked out during the sixteenth century by Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano (1501 –1576). In this work, he includes methods for solving linear equations as well as second-degree equations. The methods used by the ancients were preserved in a treatise written by Arabian mathematician Al-Kowarizmi AD 825). During these times, they used simple algebraic methods to determine solutions for practical problems related to their everyday life. The idea of a solution of equations has existed since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians. Equations with terms raised to a power greater than one can be solved by factoring and, in some specific cases, by the quadratic equation. Solutions for equations with multiple unknown variables are found by using the principles for a system of equations. For equations having one unknown, raised to a single power, two fundamental rules of algebra, including the additive property and the multiplicative property, are used to determine its solutions. The solution of an equation is the set of all values that, when substituted for unknowns, make an equation true.
